Saturday in Kapoeta
We had some overtime planned for some of the guys. The governor of the state that Kapoeta is in has a hotel and restaurant that didn't have power. They have been pushing Francis to get them power for some time now, I guess, so he wanted to get it done today. It is a single phase service that has a 3 phase back up generator. The co-op here wires everthing thru the double throw switch. Since I have never worked beyond the meter I was not a lot help back there. We got it done but it took quite a while. They go that far because of the lack of standards here both for the wiring and the electricians to wire them. After we got that done there was quite a thunder and lighting storm here. One shot took out the breaker on the the generator. This is somewhat troubling because it means the substation breaker didn't clear the fault. We had a couple of other storm related things to clear up and then called it a day. The first picture is of me climbing a pole to check for bad connectors on a pot. In the next one Pat and John Dotson will want to check out the way I've got the hand line wrapped around my butt see it does work. The last is of the service we did today. The guy on the left is John Kennedy who works for the co-op and a guy I only know as Mike who is going to do the inside wiring for this job--note the home made breaker box on the right.
I thought of something that happened in Nairobi. If you saw the first blog you saw how many bags I had. The porter who helped take them up to my room worked quite hard so I gave him a 500 shilingi tip about--6 or 7 dollars, not all that much. The next morning I got the same guy to take them down so I gave him what change I had--do not know how much, but a little less than the night before. As I was parting he asked me my first name so I told him and he told me that his wife was expecting their first baby and if it was a boy, he thought he might name it after me. Most likely just his way of flattering me but I thought it was a good story.
